Rockies Winter Highlights

The mountains and forests of the Canadian Rockies, blanketed in snow, are some of the most impressive natural landscapes on Earth. Lacking the crowds of summer, the winter world is magnificent in its quiet solitude. On snowshoes, you can get to places that would be impossible to access in summer, including the backcountry of Kananaskis (where much of the movie ‘The Revenant was filmed), across alpine lakes, and off-the-beaten-path in Banff National Park. Our expert guides will have you snowshoeing confidently following a short introduction to winter walking techniques. Strap on ice cleats to enjoy ‘ice walking’ within beautiful Johnston Canyon and take your pick of classic winter activities such as dogsledding, ice fishing, ice skating, cross country skiing, or a sleigh ride at lovely Lake Louise. At night, return to comfortable lodges, warm up by the fire, and soak in the hot tub. This package is a wonderful combination of guided day tours and optional activity add-ons, making it easy to customize to the level of activity that suits your interest and ability.

Tour Highlights:

  • Hike the backcountry of Kananaskis in snowshoes
  • Trek through the Banff National Park
  • Ice walk within the beautiful Johnston Canyon

Day 2,Johnston or Marble Canyon Ice Walk

This morning, we strap on some ice cleats and explore the frozen wonderland that is Johnston Canyon during winter time. The canyon is a very popular summer hike, but takes on a new personality in the winter with an incredible display of frozen waterfalls and ice pillars that is not to be missed. You will learn about the formation of the canyon, pick out fossil corals in the rocks, and photograph the incredible pillars of ice as you walk through the canyon bottom and over suspended catwalks. Your professional guide leads you past waterfalls frozen in mid-stream, and to the incredible "Cathedral of Ice" at the Upper Falls. It's the perfect destination for a hot chocolate break and a chance to see ice climbers in action. We return to Banff just after noon. This afternoon enjoy any of the pre-booked optional activities available to you (extra cost), such as snowshoeing, heli-flight, icefishing, dogsledding, hot springs pool, or Banff gondola. Overnight in the picturesque town of Banff. * The ice walk will be at Marble Canyon if the Johnston Canyon is not open.
